Abstract:
Preliminary results are presented for the design and fabrication of Photonic BandGap (PBGs) assemblies from Soft Materials (Liquid Crystals, Polymers) to be employed as tunable compact light amplification systems or optical reflectors in the visible and NIR range. We include the simulations for various possible periodic systems having micrometric size and fabricated from materials with refraction indices in the interval 1 – 1.7. The choice of suitable combinations can lead to obtaining tunable high quality optical amplifiers and lasing devices for designated wavelengths as well as personalized pass band optical filters. By employing birefringent materials (i.e. liquid crystals) we can address and tune in real time these types of devices - important feature that allows for a broader application range and higher versatility in the field of optics, photonics and nanotechnologies.
